Marcelo Gillespi Rodriguez

Trumpet player, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, Gillespi was born in Monte Grande, Buenos Aires Argentina. He studied guitar from an early age and soon developed his harmony with piano.

At the age of 15, he bought his first trumpet and taught himself how to play it. By 20, his focus quickly turned to the trumpet as a main instrument.

His first professional experience was during the Mardel Jazz Fest of 1984 as a duet of trumpet and percussion with the percussionist Kike Sanzol. After that, he performed with many jazz and rock bands, such as La Sonora del Plata where the music is a mix between Latin jazz with Afro rhythms.

He recorded two albums with that band:

La Sonora del plata (1986); Matina (1987)

He specialized as soloist trumpet player, becoming one of the first musicians to add the trumpet on the Argentine rock, performing with very famous local artists as Charly Garcia, Sumo, Soda Stereo, and Divididos among others.
He has received support from several critics on his own studio album recordings getting many nominations to the “Carlos Gardel” music awards. In 2008, Gillespi became a Sony Music artist and subsequently has recorded two albums.

On the last years he has shared projects with important musicians such as Luis Salinas, Pedro Aznar, Javier Malosetti, Paul Wertico, Gustavo Cerati y otros, como asi tambien ha sido telonero de artistas internacionales como Ornette Coleman, Erika Badou, Bebel Gilberto, Dewey Redman, Dave Mathews Band and others.

In 2008 he published his book “ Blow” were he talks about his experiences as trumpet player, which includes extended conversations with Dave Douglas, Enrico Rava, Allen Vizzutti, Roberto “ Fats” Fernandez, Gustavo Bergalli and others.
Right now, Gillespi is one of the most popular artists of instrumental music in Argentina. He performs in most of the important music festivals in the country and also has his own radio show every afternoon on www.fmrockandpop.com
