He was born in Barcelona (Spain)in 1962. He took up the clarinet at eight years old and earned the degree in classical clarinet. He studied with Juli Panyella and Philip Cunningham and has taken some masterclasses with Lawrence MacDonald and Walter Boyckens. He became interested in saxophone and jazz at the age of 17 years old.
Since then he has been working in both fields, classical and jazz music. His professional career began in the “Taller de Musics de Barcelona” as a saxophone and clarinet teacher. Meanwhile he was also learning about jazz language playing in combos and big band in the school. During this period, he was the tenor sax player in the “Beboporum Octet Group”, that won the second prize in the San Sebastian Jazz Festival Amateur Jazz Meeting in 1985. Also, in 1988, in Berlin, achieved the second prize in the Big Band festival.
Along his musical career he has shared music with such a great jazz soloists like, John Abercrombie, Vince mendoza, Benny Golson, Hal Galper, Tete Montoliu, Jimmy Owens, Harold Land, Ralph Lalama, Dave Liebman, Egberto Gismonti, Randy Brecker, Dick Oatts, Nicholas Payton, Wendell Brunius, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Ann Hampton Callaway, Judie Niemack, Jordi Rossy, Lluis Vidal, Carles Benavent, Perico Sambeat, Jeff Ballard, jaco Abel, Inaki Salvador, Joan Sanmarti, Manel Camp, Horacio Fumero, Eduardo Tancredi, Miguel Zenon, Michel Camilo…
And, also along his long professional career, he has offered his musical talent with spanish musical stars like “Mecano”, Lluis Llach, Joan manuel Serrat, Moncho, Dyango, Joan Isaac, Martirio, Chano Dominguez, among others…
He also has developed his talent on classical music playing both, saxophone and clarinet, in classical music. During 10 years, from 1990 till 2000, he was member of the “Orquestra de Cambra del Teatre Lliure” from Barcelona (Spain). With them he has recorded about 12 records of spanish classical music, (Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albeniz, Frederic Mompou, Tomas Marco, Joan Albert Amargos…) and Stravinsky?s music…and also jazz music from Lluis Vidal, Dave Liebman among others…
He won the best wind soloist prize from the “Associacio de Musics de Jazz de Catalunya” in 1995 and 1996.
Since 2001 he is teaching Jazz saxophone and clarinet in “Esmuc” in the Jazz Department of the “Superior School of Music of Catalunya”.
Nowadays he is collaborating with some big bands: Big Acustic Band (the music of Alfons Carrascosa), Barcelona Jazz Orquestra Conducted by Dani Alonso) and Jazz Terrassa Big Band.
He also has his own projects: Jazz Visions Quartet and Xavi Figuerola Quartet where he is developing his personal feelings about music.
