Pawel Smorag is a versatile instrumentalist, soloist, orchestral musician and sideman working with many bands and orchestras including Polish and foreign artists. He has proved himself to be a charismatic saxophonist with a seductive sound.
He graduated from the Musical Academy in Katowice at the Jazz Music Faculty and he has been taking inspiration from the work of such musicians like: Eric Marienthal, Kirk Whalum or Gerard Albright that helped him to develop his own, very energetic and emotional style.
Pawel’s musical expression is based on the mixture of different styles of music: jazz, pop, soul and rock that makes his music very unique and breaks down many stylistic barriers.
The saxophonist performed countless times in many music clubs in Poland, Europe and in the USA. He collaborated and made recordings with many artists as Shakin Dudi, Arek Skolik and Ewa Blaszczyk.
As a member of The New Sami Swoi and Zbigniew Czwojda Orchestra, Pawel Smorag played many concerts in jazz clubs in Poland and in Germany. In the orchestra of the legendary leader and trumpeter Zbigniew Czwojda, Pawel performed with the best Polish jazz artists: Marek Balata, Ewa Uryga, Adam Wendt. He also took part in the concerts of a great American jazz vocalist Wayne Barlett.
He also frequently performed with the jazz-rock band Grottkoland and participated in the recording session of the solo album of the bassist Michal Grott. Since 2000 he collaborated with the instrumental project Ars Harmonica created by the accordionists connected with Musical Academy in Katowice.
Pawel Smorag, as a saxophonist of the Big Band of the Jazz Faculty at the Musical Academy under management of Andrzej Zubek, performed together with: Alicja Majewska, Wlodzimierz Korcz, the band Partita, Banda i Wanda, Boguslaw Mec, Jerzy Polomski, Katarzyna Muller, Lora Szafran, Grzegorz Karnas, Krystyna Pronko, Jan Kyks Skrzek, the actors Wiktor Zborowski and Marian Opania.
He also collaborated with different bands as Varius Manx, Habakuk, with jazz vocalists Anna Serafinska and Grzegorz Karnas.
Currently Pawel has been working intensively on his own solo material. He is based in Czestochowa, Poland.
