First, you’ll notice this saxophone came with 2 thumb rings in the case pockets. One of these can be worn on your right-hand thumb, which allows you to hit the right-hand thumb hook while playing. With practice, it’s possible to play various percussive rhythms while playing virtually anything on the horn. While two rings of differing sizes are included to closer fit your particular thumb size, feel free to bend open or closed either ring with pliers to better fit your thumb. Additionally, the second ring can be used on your right-hand ring-finger to create other percussive sounds on the rest of the sax (see other modifications below for more details). You’ll notice that the thumb hook is deliberately shorter for the various ways one can hit the hook. You can simply hit the top of the hook, strike up and down to play faster, or strike both the hook and the base of the hook together for a louder, stronger “flam” double-hit.

To allow more room for the thumb ring to strike the thumb hook, the key guard around the alternate F# pad has been shortened.
An additional brace/guard has been welded on the base of the horn, if you’d like to try pounding your horn on the ground. (preferably NOT while playing!)
Similar to hitting the bell of the horn with your rings, this guard cover can be struck to give yet another percussive sound.
The low Bb key has been shortened a bit to allow the player to grab the saxophone with their left hand right below this key, if they wish to play various parts of their sax percussively with their right-hand ring(s): scraping the bell, pounding the horn on the ground (see below modifications for more explanation), etc.

A bell guard has been attached to the outer side of the bell so that you can experiment hitting your ring(s) against the bell, without scratching or denting the bell itself.
Additionally, the bell guard includes a ribbed texture for a scraping/shaker sound when sliding your rings up anddown along the spine.
Instead of the typical single hook for the neck strap, this horn has a triple-ring, giving the player more control with the overall balance of the horn when hanging from the neck strap. This is especially important if using the thumb ring
percussively while playing the sax, since the Player’s right-hand thumb will not be supporting the sax with the thumb hook.

To create a percussive “guiro” effect, use your ring to scrape along the ribbed rod along the alternate F# key with your right hand. This can be done while playing—or not!
The newly designed altissimo F# key allows the player to press the key with the inside knuckle of their right hand middle or ring finger keeping the finger tip close to its respective pearl key, instead of having to lift the entire finger tip away from the pearl to press. This simple design change allows connecting/slurring certain combinations of notes with the high F# that weren’t previously possible.

This horn features a new left hand thumb key that controls the altissimo F# key. This additional key allows the player to finger a middle F and an altissimo F# with just the left hand. It ultimately allows someone to play chromatically from a low G to middle F, and from middle G all the way into the altissimo by using a few altered fingerings (mainly involving the palm keys and new F# key) With time and practice, these fingerings can become just as second nature as the original two-handed fingerings.
See the online video guide for these fingerings. This modification allows the player to do other things with his or her right hand, like playing another instrument, hitting various parts of the sax with the thumb rings, or even conducting.

You may notice only 1 of 2 screws present on the leg guard on the bottom back left-hand side of the horn. This is intentional, as are the 4 added loose screws. When the upper side of the guard is pulled out, this piece can be played like a percussive vibraslap, by pulling back and releasing the guard, allowing the screws to rattle. (Note: these loose screws are intended for the purpose of creating additional percussive sounds. However, if you notice them rattling too much when playing “regularly” on the sax, they can of course be removed. Also, the additional screw can be used to reattach the guard on both sides to the horn).
The most visible modifications on this custom BEATBoX SAX are the one-of-a-kind “scratch” engravings throughout the body and neck of the horn. While giving the horn an edgy“battle-worn” look, the scratch engravings also encourage the player to experiment with the percussive possibilities of the horn, such as banging, scratching, and slapping the horn in the above-described ways, as well as hopefully exploring your own unique sounds!
