The Concept of P. Mauriat Flutes

At P. Mauriat, we believe that a well-crafted flute should not only be an instrument — it should be a partner in musical growth. Drawing on our legacy of making acclaimed saxophones for discerning professionals, we have brought the same passion and precision to the development of our flutes.

The P. Mauriat flute line is designed for aspiring musicians, educators, and advancing players who seek professional-level performance and build quality. Each model is crafted to deliver a warm, expressive tone, smooth key action, and consistent response across all registers — enabling musicians to focus fully on artistry and expression.

Whether in the studio or on stage, P. Mauriat flutes provide the musical depth and reliability that today’s flutists deserve.

Handcut Headjoint

Every P. Mauriat flute features a meticulously hand-cut sterling silver headjoint — the heart of the instrument’s sound and response. Our headjoints are shaped and refined by skilled artisans to ensure a rich, centered tone with fluid articulation and effortless projection.

Each cut is tested and fine-tuned in collaboration with professional flutists, ensuring that the headjoint performs reliably across a wide range of playing styles and dynamic demands. The result is an expressive, flexible sound that supports both subtle nuance and powerful presence — from delicate phrasing to full-bodied resonance.

Mechanism

P. Mauriat flutes are designed to encompass the full range of today’s mainstream specifications and player requirements. Each model in the series is crafted for unrestricted performance, regardless of the player’s level or musical style. All models share these core features:

  • Open hole
  • Pointed key arms
  • Offset G
  • Split-E mechanism
  • B footjoint
  • Silver-plated key works

Material

P. Mauriat flutes are crafted using mainly two high-quality materials: sterling silver (925) and Japanese nickel silver alloy. The sterling silver models offer a rich, warm tone with greater resonance and dynamic flexibility, making them ideal for advanced and professional players seeking depth and color in their sound.

In contrast, our nickel silver alloy models are more durable and affordable, providing clear, focused tone and reliable playability—perfect for beginners or those seeking a dependable daily instrument. Regardless of material, each flute is carefully built to meet the demands of serious musicians at every level.

Tone Holes

Drawn tone holes are formed directly from the flute’s tubing. This results in an instrument with a standard build and quick response. The sound is clear and vibrant, with smooth projection and precise control. These qualities make it a great choice for players who value flexibility and crisp articulation.

Soldered tone holes are crafted separately and carefully attached to the flute body. This adds strength and density around each tone hole, which contributes to a deeper tone with focused resonance and strong projection. These characteristics are often preferred by advanced performers.

Many brands offer soldered tone holes only on their full silver models. In contrast, P. Mauriat includes this premium feature on flutes with the silver body flute, giving more players access to its tonal advantages without the added cost of top-tier models.

The PFL-581 and PFL-681 both include soldered tone holes on the C key, D trill, and D# trill.
The PFL-781 features fully soldered tone holes throughout the entire instrument.
