Biography

His playing has been described by critics as “passionate” and “articulate’. Tots is probably the most distinct and influential sax sound in the Philippines today. His musical journey started, when, as a teenager, he was introduced to the sounds of Bird, Trane and Miles. After studies with Joe Viola, Jimmy Mosher and George Garzone at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tots came back to his native Philippines to pursue a career as a soloist and session musician.
He has played alongside the likes of Terumasa Hino, Jeremy Monteiro, Eugene Pao, McCoy Tyner, while leading his own ensembles. He has also been a regular figure at numerous Jazz festivals, North Sea Jazz, JakJazz, Mt. Fuji Jazz, Java jazz, to name a few.
Currently, he heads the Jazz Studies program at the University Of Santo Tomas, Manila, spreading the gospel of jazz to today’s youth.
